Humaid Al-Shamsi: I consider myself privileged to work in an organization that shares the same vision and values the humanitarian support of all patients

Humaid Al-Shamsi, Director of the Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“‘I want to help people’ is the most naive and straightforward answer, just like any aspiring student who hopes to become a doctor in the future, this is most likely answer that will make you fail your medical school interview despite being the most valid reason to become a physician.

Interestingly, this was my answer when I was a teenager with similar aspirations.

Fast forward 30 years later, if you were to ask me now, ‘Why are you a doctor?’ my response remains unchanged: ‘Because I want to help people.’

This photo was taken yesterday in my clinic in Sharjah with my team after we evaluated over 50 cancer patients. My team and I worked tirelessly for 11 hours, providing nonstop clinic services. More than 20 of these patients received free consultations.

Sometimes, a few of my team members suggest that we should stop offering free consultations due to the time it consumes and our busy schedules.

However, I simply reiterate that my mission has always been to take care of my patients, regardless of their socioeconomic status. As long as I am in a position to help any patient, I will continue to do so until the last day of my career.

I consider myself privileged to work in an organization that shares the same vision and values the humanitarian support of all patients. In an area where healthcare often prioritizes profit, I take great pride in having the support of my organization to provide free consultations for all patients without any obstacles.

Being in the field of medicine and having the ability to make even a small contribution to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients is a gift from Allah that I deeply appreciate. It is not enough to merely claim that we put our patients first; we must demonstrate it in reality.

I sincerely wish we could do more, especially by traveling to underserved countries to support the needs of cancer patients worldwide. This is something I will strive to accomplish to the best of my abilities in the future InshaAllah.”
