“It’s time for the first female United Nations Secretary-General. For the last couple of weeks, discussions have been taking momentum — not only in NY — thanks to the brilliant advocacy work of many organizations and networks.
Here in Geneva, we are also paying attention. Some of the Ambassadors and counterparts I regularly interact with champion the idea. I hope their capitals will be supportive.
Last year Dr Tedros rightly mentioned how embarrassing it’s the fact that in almost 80 years, we haven’t had a female UN SG. The timely coverage by PassBlue is worth your time. This article has a long list of rather qualified and experienced potential candidates.
Notably, the top three in the survey are from Latin America and the Caribbean. Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile; Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbardos; and María Fernanda Espinosa, former President of the UNGA and former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ecuador.
