“My take-away points from this interesting article published in The Lancet about the ‘elephants in the room’ that we all need to address to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030 :
➡ We need to move beyond political rhetoric, with more guidance on how to implement global recommendations at local level. Achieving UHC will require multisectoral collaboration and whole-of-government commitment together with adequate financial investment, social participation, and civil society engagement.
➡ We need to streamline the use of health financing, to reduce fragmentation and ensure alignment with local priorities. The design of health benefit packages and strategic purchasing of health services should promote efficiency, equity, and quality.
➡ We need to find coherence between financing, governance and implementation. The sdg3 Global Action Plan and Future of Global Health Initiatives processes need to be supported to reduce the existing fragmentation of global health efforts.
From advocacy to action, there is a continuum in which City Cancer Challenge plays its part, with support to implementation research (Meritxell Mallafré Larrosa), innovative initiatives on health financing in LMICs (Mathieu Morand), and continuous efforts to bridge the gap between policy and practice (Alfredo Polo and Benjamin Anderson).”
