Erman Akkus: H. Pylori and Colorectal Cancer
Erman Akkus, Medical Oncology Fellow at Ankara University, shared on X/Twitter:
“H. Pylori and Colorectal Cancer! H. pylori positivity > higher colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality, especially in untreated individuals.
- Retrospective cohort
- 812,736 individuals tested, 205,178 (25.2%) positive
- H. pylori positive group > higher 5-, 10-, and 15-year cumulative CRC incidences (log-rank test P < .0001), higher incident and fatal CRC risk (HR 1.18 and 1.12)
- Treatment versus no treatment> lower CRC incidence and mortality (absolute risk reduction 0.23%-0.35%), untreated had higher incident and fatal CRC risk (HR 1.23 and 1.40)
- Underlying mechanism/pathogenesis?
- Confounding? Same lifestyle and sociaeconomical factors for both H.pylori infection and CRC?”
