Isabel Mestres: A thought-provoking webinar where we will unveil the progress made in the development of C/Can’s new gender equity strategy

Isabel Mestres, CEO at City Cancer Challenge Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today 800.000 deaths could be averted if all women everywhere could access optimal cancer care. How can we all act upon this?

Cancer is a big contributor to health inequality. 70% of yearly cancer-related deaths occur in LMICs. The disease disproportionately affects women, who often face intersecting challenges due to geography, race, and ethnicity, among others.

The Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer showed that there is a profound gender gap when it comes to accessing cancer care. According to the authors, the patriarchal influence in cancer care, research, and policymaking results in systemic barriers for women as patients, the workforce and decision-makers. These barriers include under-representation in leadership roles and gender-based discrimination.

At City Cancer Challenge, we are hosting a thought-provoking webinar coming up next week, where we will unveil the progress made in the development of C/Can’s new gender equity strategy. We will elevate the voice of our city stakeholders, like Jessie Githanga, Nur Aishah Mohd Taib and Fatima Luna, facing these challenges in the first person. We will count on the experience of Verna Vanderpuye, co-chair of The Lancet Commission, and the private sector’s perspective on gender equity, thanks to the participation of Leticia (Tisha) Boatman.

When: 7 March
Time: 15:00 – 16:00 CET
Link.

I can’t wait to hear their stories! And more to come as part of C/Can’s new gender equity strategy to strengthen health systems within our cities in a gender-responsive approach, leading the way towards a future where health equity is a reality for all. See you there!”
