Amol Akhade: So we need to make sure that low and lower middle income countries have improved access to cancer care

Amol Akhade, Consultant Medical Oncologist/Hematologist at Suyog Cancer Clinics, posted on X:

“4th Feb is World Cancer Day.

And this year’s theme is “close the care gap ”

So let us understand how much is the projected gap In incidence and mortality at 2045 ( 21 years from now )
In 2045 , low and Lower Middle income countries will have rise in incidence of cancer by 114 % and 77 % respectively.
Same number for upper middle and high income countries will be around 50 % and 34 % respectively.

For mortality, the same numbers are 117 % and 86 % rise for low and lower middle income countries respectively.

While it will be 71.8 % rise for upper middle and 48.2 % for high income countries.

Maximum rise of cases and mortality will be in three countries
China, India and USA, in that order , due to high population of these countries. ( note the numbers for 9 countries across different parts of the world)

So we need to make sure that low and lower middle income countries have improved access to cancer care so as to have any meaningful impact on cancer control all over the world.

We have to work together to close the gap”
