Roberto Martin: Honored to Attend the 2025 Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop

Roberto Martin, Medical Oncologist and Clinical Investigator at START Barcelona – HM CIOCC Early Phase Program (Hospital HM Nou Delfos), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This week, I had the honor of attending the Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research (MCCR), sponsored by EORTC, ESMO, and AACR, after my research project was selected.

At this workshop, dozens of fellows took part in lectures, meetings with experts, and small group discussions, all aimed at designing the protocol for a clinical trial – as correctly and perfectly as possible – the very one we had proposed. To do this, we were guided by international experts who were more than just that – they were true mentors in both professional and personal aspects of life.

I’m deeply grateful for the support I received from our group’s faculty: Eric Rubin, María de Miguel, Patricia LoRusso, and Yu Shyr, who led us in a way that was not only professional but also kind and human. I also want to thank the rest of my group’s fellows (PDG10!) for their support too. There were moments of intense work, debate, laughter, meditation, and reflection.
One of the most beautiful aspects was that, even though we never stopped working, we were constantly reminded that the goal of all this was to be capable of creating more diverse, more ethical, and fairer clinical trial protocols. The patient is the heart of our work, and it is for them that we do what we do.

Another particularly special part of the experience was coming together and connecting with professionals from many different countries – getting to know fellows from around the world and learning from their ways of working. At the same time, I was able to continue building strong professional and personal bonds with fellow Spanish participants, and others from different nationalities (I even joined the Portuguese group! Diogo Silva, Teresa Amaral MD, PhD). It wasn’t just the fellows who bonded – so did the faculty members.

And all of this took place in a peaceful, nature-surrounded setting in a small Dutch village.

I don’t have enough words to express how grateful I am for both the professional and personal experience of attending the MCCR Workshop. A special thank-you to Tatiana Hernández-Guerrero, who helped make it possible for me to be there. I hope to stay in touch with most of the incredible people and professionals I met.
