Ramy Sedhom Spoke at Northwestern Medicine Hospitals Grand Rounds on “The Price of Progress”
Ramy Sedhom, Clinical Director of Palliative Care at Penn Medicine Princeton Health, shared a post on X:
“Today, I spoke Northwestern Medicine Hospitals Grand Rounds on “The Price of Progress” – a reminder our excitement post-ASCO25 should be tempered by reality:
– 33% of patients spend their life savings within 2 yrs of a cancer dx
– 50% experience financial distress
– 75% leave the workforceEvery advance has a shadow:
– Driving 60+ mins for trials
– $1000s in co-pays
– Lost wages
– Indirect costs of travel/caregiving
– and we wonder why our trials don’t reflect the real world.Let’s fix access, not just endpoints.
Told the story of King Dionysius and “The Sword of Damocles”. Damocles envied King Dionysius’ wealth and power. So the king offered to swap places—seating Damocles on a golden throne… beneath a sword hanging by a single thread.
A lesson: with great privilege comes unseen peril. A fitting metaphor for cancer care today.
Our patients sit beneath the same sword: Hopeful for a breakthrough Terrified by the cost Let’s not ignore the danger in our pursuit of progress Financial Toxicity Supportive Oncology.
