Ciarán Nicholl Shares EU Initiatives to Reduce Cancer Burden During EWAC 2025
Ciarán Nicholl, Director of Health & Food at European Commission, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’m dreaming of the moment where I won’t have to write posts anymore about cancer meaning it will be over, no more lives lost, no more hearts broken, no more suffering.
As we mark the start of EWAC2025, I’m proud to remind you about the work being done by our amazing team at the EU Science, Research and Innovation to fight against cancer:
We identify and assess the risks associated with environmental and lifestyle factors that contribute to causing cancer (exposure to carcinogens, poor diet, physical inactivity…).
We provide scientific advice on how to promote healthy eating habits and reduce the risk of cancer through dietary choices.
We monitor cancer trends across EU countries, to fight inequalities in cancer across the EU.
We evaluate the potential health impacts of policies and interventions aimed at reducing the burden of cancer, and provide recommendations based on evidence-based science.
We look at how AI could enhance cancer diagnosis and treatment.
By working together, we can begin to make cancer a thing of the past.
So let’s keep researching, and let’s keep hoping that one day, we’ll have a cancer-free future to celebrate.”
Ciarán Nicholl marked the start of EWAC 2025 by outlining the European Commission’s efforts in cancer prevention and policy. He emphasized the role of science in understanding risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, leveraging AI, and reducing inequalities across EU member states.
