Quoting Ethiopian Society of Hematology and Oncology-ESHO’s post:

“The 4th Annual Conference of the Ethiopian Society of Hematology and Oncology will be conducted on February 24 and 25, 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We hope many national and international stakeholders will join us at the annual conference celebration.
Here, we would like to introduce the profiles of the executive members of ESHO. Could you keep in touch with ESHO?

Dr. Haimanot Kasahun
ESHO Executive Committee and research focal

Haimanot Kasahun Alemu is a clinical oncologist at Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College with 10 years of experience in cancer management.

Dr Haimanot received her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Gondar, the oldest health science school, and trained her clinical oncology specialty at Addis Ababa University. She did her internship in radiation treatment at the University of Oslo, Norway, and an additional fellowship in radiotherapy in cancer management at the National Center for Radiotherapy, Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Korlebu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana with affiliation to the University of Ghana.

Dr. Haimanot has an excellent track record in the country‘s cancer care practice. While she was just a general practitioner, she played a vital role in establishing a dedicated cancer unit at the University of Gondar Hospital (UOGH), where there was no oncologist at the time she was the only dedicated physician to attend all cases of adult oncology for more than a year, therefore, she played an irreplaceable role in maintaining the unit functional in its earliest phase. She received a letter of appreciation for this achievement.

Currently, UOGH is one of the few radiation expansion centers in Ethiopia.  She is also a recipient of an IAEA fellowship award and actively participates in ASCO’s agenda in Africa.

Dr Haimanot is well known for her compassionate, selfless, and professionally dependable care for her patients. Her areas of interest are breast, gynecology, gastrointestinal cancers, pediatric radiation, and palliative oncology. She is also a research enthusiast who actively publishes research works, especially in the cancer care of LMIC. She believes generating evidence in local settings needs to be strengthened to tailor management approaches in the context of resource-limited countries.

Dr Haimanot is a founding and executive member and research focal person of the Ethiopian Society of Hematology and Oncology (ESHO). She is also a member of AORTIC, ASCO and ESMO.

ESHO, Moving Cancer Care Forward.”
