Colm Henry: Congratulations to all involved in the Transforming Theatre Programme on winning two major awards
Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer at Health Service Executive, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Congratulations to all involved in the Transforming Theatre Programme on winning two major awards – the Innovation in Service Delivery award at the HSE Service Excellence Awards and the European Innovation Award 2023, presented by the European Association of Hospital Managers.
The 18-month pilot at South / South West Hospital Group (SSWHG) was developed in response to long waiting lists for surgical care and focussed on improving patient flow through the operating theatre. It was a collaboration between the HSE, RCSI and SSWHG, and the National Clinical Programmes for Surgery and Anaesthesia.
The impact of the programme is evident, with improved operating theatre effectiveness across SSWHG. In the first six months of 2023, used theatre time increased by 1,363 hours and 1,775 additional patients were seen compared to the same period in 2022.
The programme has been extended and is being rolled out nationally as the National Perioperative Patient Pathway Enhancement Programme, benefitting patients and hospitals by reducing waiting lists for surgical care by maximising theatre resources. The programme is nationally coordinated by the Strategic Programmes Office and is currently being rolled out in Dublin Midlands Hospital Group and Saolta University Healthcare Group.”
