“Cancer Survivorship: Words Matter.

I’m starting in the clinic again soon after almost three years since I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I’ve been mentally rehearsing for months. One fear that grips me is hearing the words “welcome back.” I dread it. There is no “going back” or “getting back” to the way it was before cancer. For me, life will never be the same and in many ways that’s good. Despite multiple long lasting and possibly permanent effects, I’m stronger now emotionally. I wish that instead of welcoming me back, everyone could WELCOME ME FOWARD.In the words of Ice Cube in one of my favorite songs this past couple of years, Big Subwoofer, “NEVER HUSTLE BACKWARDS, ALWAYS FORWARD.” ”
