David Pickering: 2023 Year-In-Review!
David Pickering, Vice President for Clinical Applications at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“2023 Year-In-Review!
This is my 3rd annual year-in-review post that includes some of the best things I’ve read and seen in the last year. These are my professional recommendations only, please reach out directly if you want my thoughts on Taylor Swift or the last season of Succession.
Favorite article/post of 2023 – my favorite personal LinkedIn post this year is also one that got the most engagement – Always Cheer.
It’s a bit of a manifesto from Jason Fried to always be positive. That’s a great message going into the new year!
Favorite article read in 2023 – this article from Smithsonian Magazine tells the history of some amazing clinicians at St. Jude working to solve childhood Leukemia.
Favorite book read in 2023 – The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race by Walter Isaacson. It’s a blend of the story, characters, science, and politics behind CRISPR. I also really enjoyed Isaacson’s biography of Elon Musk, a controversial figure to be sure but the book itself is a fascinating read.
I’ll add an extra book recommendation that’s also kind of a plug for my new hometown. It Came From Memphis by Robert Gordon was such a fun read. It describes how “Underground Memphis” contributed to the changing music and cultural scenes across America. Highly recommended!
Finally, I want to say thanks to my community here on LinkedIn. I’m looking forward to talking to all of you in 2024!”
