Taha M. Mehemed: Improving Health Outcomes for Children with Cancer in Libya
Taha M. Mehemed, National Professional Officer/NCDs technical Officer at
“Proud to have led the coordination of a meaningful step forward in our collaboration with IRCCS Giannina Gaslini Pediatric Hospital, GASLINI ACADEMY as part of the WHO-led project “Improving Health Outcomes for Children with Cancer in Libya,” generously supported by the National Oil Corporation.
From April 6 to 10, a visiting team from Gaslini Hospital carried out a technical mission at the National Cancer Institute in Misrata. The visit focused on supporting pediatric oncology services through clinical collaboration, case discussions, and the design of tailored training programs.
As the responsible officer for this project at WHO Libya, it has been both a challenging and rewarding experience to organize this mission — made possible thanks to the strong partnership with the The National Cancer Control Authority and the unwavering commitment of our colleagues on the ground in Misrata.
Some key outcomes:
- A joint service assessment of pediatric oncology services.
- Hands-on engagement and knowledge exchange between teams.
- Design of on-the-ground training pathways.
- Selection of a group of Misrata-based healthcare professionals for a one-month clinical training at Gaslini Hospital, each to be paired with a dedicated mentor.
This mission is just the beginning — we’re building long-term, structured collaboration to ensure better care for children facing cancer in Libya.
A heartfelt thank you to all partners and colleagues who continue to make this work possible.”
