Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: The international community must intensify its response
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, shared a post on X/Twitter:
“Sudan’s worsening conflict is playing out before our eyes, which in just 8 months has:
- Displaced 7 million people, 1.5 million of whom have fled into neighbouring countries
- Forced 70% of health facilities in conflict-affected areas to close or drastically cut services
- Left 11 million people needing urgent health aid
- Seen cholera spread in 9 states, with over 8200 people infected.
The WHO, with local partners, is supporting efforts to treat people afflicted by cholera, acute malnutrition and other conditions, running outbreak early warning systems, supplying medicines and more. We are also responding to the health needs of Sudanese sheltering in neighboring nations, incl. South Sudan. The international community must intensify its response to find ways to end the conflict and deliver aid needed by the people of Sudan.”
