Wafaa M Rashed: Science Must Lead, Not Politics

Wafaa M RashedFaculty Lecturer of pharmacy at Ahram Canadian University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Science Must Lead, Not Politics.

The global childhood cancer research community is facing a serious challenge—one that could shape public understanding, funding, and policy for years to come.

The U.S. government is set to release a report on the causes of chronic diseases in children, including childhood cancer, on May 24. Given the global influence of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—the world’s largest funder of biomedical research—scientific accuracy in this report is critical.

When reports are issued on childhood cancer causation, the stakes are too high for misinformation. Lives depend on science.

Why This Matters Globally:

  • NIH’s research priorities impact funding, treatment innovation, and global collaborations.
  • Scientific conclusions influence policy decisions that affect children worldwide.
  • Childhood cancer research must be guided ONLY by data, not political agendas.
  • Experts in pediatric cancer causation must be at the table—not excluded.

This is a call to action. We must ensure that reports shaping childhood cancer policy are scientifically sound and informed by the world’s leading experts.

We call on all childhood cancer research institutions, advocacy organizations, and global health leaders to stand together in defending scientific integrity and ensure that global research funding, policy, and public understanding remain rooted in science.

Now, more than ever, we must defend scientific integrity in childhood cancer research.

How can the global research community ensure that political influences do not undermine decades of progress in pediatric oncology?”
