Lisa Lacasse: The patient voice is incredibly important in our work

Lisa Lacasse, President of American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The patient voice is incredibly important in our work to amplify access to care issues in communities across the U.S. American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) volunteer, Molly Smith, courageously shared her journey on NBC Nightly News this week, shining a spotlight on the urgent need to remove barriers to breast cancer screenings. Breast cancer screenings increase the chances of early detection, which leads to more treatment options and a higher likelihood of survival. However, a major drawback is cost, as many screenings are not fully covered by insurance. While most private health insurance plans cover regular mammograms, additional screenings – critical for early cancer detection – are often only partially covered or not covered at all. Cancer patients shouldn’t have to worry about the cost of life-saving care; their focus should be on their wellness. The financial burden of screenings adds unnecessary stress, compounding the mental and emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis.

Watch here.

We are grateful for Molly, along with other volunteers, such as Doris from South Dakota and Shelley from Montana, who amplify their voices to bring attention to this critical issue.

Thank you to the NBC News team for their collaboration in raising awareness. A special thanks to Josh Wilson for the work to uplift the voices of our volunteers. Eliminating cost-sharing for every step of the screening process is a crucial move toward ending cancer as we know it – for everyone.”
