Siobhan Freeney: Be smart about being dense

Siobhan Freeney, Founder of Lobular Ireland and Patient Advocate Founder of Being Dense, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“If I had been told I had Dense Breasts determined by my Mammograms years before my Diagnosis – my Invasive Breast Cancer would have been found earlier before it had spread into my nodes.

My Surgeon told me it had likely been there for 6 – 8 years. I’d had 5 Mammograms in that space of time, I’d done everything I could, including visits to my GP and requesting additional Mammograms. No one told me I had Dense Breasts and that I needed Ultrasound or MRI.

Please ask and do not get fobbed off. Knowing about your Category of Breast Density is such an important aspect of your Breast Cancer Screening.

BREAST DENSITY is Classified by the Radiologist who reads your Mammogram.

If you have Category C or D Density you are considered to have Dense Breasts and therefore require Additional Screening, Ultrasound or MRI.

Your Breast Density is not CLASSIFIED INFORMATION and should be available to YOU.

Be Smart About Being Dense.

I encourage ALL women to Request their Personal Category of Breast Density by using the Request Form linked here.”

Svetlana Nikic, Founder of Precision Oncology Consulting, reshared the post on LinkedIn, adding:

“Commenting for visibility across my network – not just for my female connections but also their male friends, partners, family members.

Most of us do mammograms as part of our checkups – don’t be shy, ask your doctor whether you have dense breast tissue.

Why is this important?

Well, while it doesn’t mean you will get it, it is associated with higher risk of developing a breast cancer – knowing your breast density will keep you more attent for any suspicious symptoms and you wouldn’t want to miss any mammograms (personal thoughts, I am not a treating physician).

Thank you Siobhan Freeney for creating awareness on this important topic!

In order to get Standardised Breast Density Reporting across Europe.

Please add your name to ongoing Petition.”
