Julie A Sosa, Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF, made the following post on Twitter:
“Last yr was exhausting. Being a surgeon & Chair is hard but doing it as an (only) daughter caring for aging, ill parents seems impossible. We MUST create a more supportive community, inventory/available resources and provide paid eldercare leave.
Dialogue must include informal caregiving as part of what is supported to retain the academic medicine workforce. It’s a crucial investment because these caregivers are already struggling – & women in particular are impacted. ”
