Christos Tsagkaris: 2024 witnessed bridges between clinical practice and policy impact
Christos Tsagkaris, Resident Doctor at Kinderspital Zürich, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As the trees keep the shape of the wind while the wind is gone, so do words keep our form when we are no longer there.
Apart from adapting the few above words of Georgios Seferis, I find it difficult to summarise the torrent of people, thoughts, and actions that shaped 2024. Many good colleagues have previously entrusted this task to AI, so here is an epilogue of this year by a coauthor. Studio.
2024 witnessed bridges between clinical practice and policy impact.
From researching pediatric gait biomechanics to developing cancer care recommendations for conflict zones, it showed how comprehensive approaches advance healthcare.
Clinical Research and Practice:
- Investigated gait alterations in children with decreased femoral torsion, presenting at EORS – European Orthopaedic Research Society and Swiss Orthopaedics.
- Examined musculoskeletal effects of substance use among youth, connecting orthopedic outcomes with public health implications.
- Advanced in pediatric orthopedic practice at Kinderspital Zürich.
- Completed the University of Oxford Global Surgery Short Course.
Evidence Implementation and Policy:
- Published manifesto on improving cancer care in conflict zones in The Lancet Group with the World Health Organization, The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC), and OncoDaily among others.
- Appointed Social Media Editor at JBI Evidence Implementation (Alex Mignone).
- Represented Greece in the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s EVID Action Youth Network with Evangelia Savvidou.
- Continued board membership in the European Commission’s Cancer Mission.
- Published advocacy paper in BMJ Tobacco Control on Youth vs Tobacco with Jose M Martin-Moreno, Rui Medeiros et al
3 discussions shaping dialogue:
- Can young people contribute to cancer prevention and control?
- Analyzing biomechanical impacts of reduced femoral torsion in pediatric populations.
- All roads lead to Rome to discuss health and climate in FAO with Isabell S., Michela Pellegatta, Camilla Melis, Pablo Russo, Erica Martinelli, and Parneet Kaur.
Professional Development:
- C2 German certification.
- Expanded collaboration across 8+ European health organizations.
- Strengthened international research partnerships
Looking ahead: The intersection of research, practice, and policy remains crucial for addressing both preventable and non-preventable conditions.
Quoting Thucydides: If war can make words change their meaning, then it is time to use words to address and change the detrimental impact of war on cancer care.
Our initiatives must be inclusive and comprehensive, but above all, tangible and implementable.
Grateful to all, directly, indirectly, and diagonally mentioned, for making this year memorable,e and best wishes to all for 2025.”
