Gashaw Arega: The dire need of dedicated conscious sedation for pediatric cancer patients in LMICs

Gashaw Arega, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health and Consultant Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, reshared a post by Syed Ibrahim Bukhari, Senior Fellow, Pediatric Hematology Oncology program at Aga Khan University, on LinkedIn, adding:

Dr. Syed Ibrahim Bukhari,(MD, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist) highlighted the dire need of dedicated conscious sedation for pediatric cancer patients in LMICs.

The increasing burden of pediatric hematology and oncology cases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) underscores the urgent need for dedicated conscious sedation services. Pediatric cancer and blood disorders often require invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, and biopsy collections, which are physically and emotionally distressing for children.

In the absence of proper sedation, these procedures can lead to severe pain, psychological trauma, and reduced cooperation, ultimately compromising both the quality of care and patient outcomes.”

Quoting Syed Ibrahim Bukhari‘s post:

“My opinion article, co-authored with Gashaw Arega, highlights the urgent need for dedicated conscious sedation teams in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly for pediatric oncology patients.

The absence of such teams often leads to unnecessary treatment delays and poor outcomes.

We hope that, with time, this gap will be addressed, paving the way for a brighter future for pediatric oncology care in LMICs.”
