Alejandra Mendez: Fertility preservation ensuring the best possible quality of life after cancer

Alejandra Mendez, Vice President of Childhood Cancer International, shared on LinkedIn:

“Good news from Australia!
Hazel, an 8-month-old girl, yesterday became the youngest person in the world to have her ovarian tissue frozen to preserve her fertility. The girl was diagnosed with a rare cancer that required chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which likely would have prevented her from having children in the future. Thanks to this procedure, she will be able to choose to be a biological mother one day.

Fertility preservation for cancer patients is essential to guarantee the best possible quality of life after cancer. A simple procedure performed BEFORE starting treatment could guarantee them the possibility of becoming a biological parent in the future. I call on the Chilean authorities to reflect on this reality and to move forward with the draft of the ‘Fertility Preservation Law’ presented to Congress.
Thank you Mary McGowan OAM for sharing this hopeful news!”
