Arif Kamal: A leading barrier to accessing state-of-the-art treatment and clinical trials is housing
Arif Kamal, Chief patient officer for the American Cancer Society, posted on LinkedIn.
“A leading barrier to accessing state-of-the-art treatment and clinical trials is housing. For many patients must travel to receive the right cancer care, hotel costs are not tenable, particularly when facing growing out of pocket medical costs and lost wages from missed work (financial toxicity).
At American Cancer Society we have 32 Hope Lodge communities that provide a “home away from home” to nearly 35,000 unique individuals across 500,000 nights – at no cost – and we’re looking to grow this critical program in new communities across the country.
At the 30K foot level, this is an important program for ACS to support. At the 3-foot level, access to free lodging is critical for many to access lifesaving treatments.
Here’s a short video that emphasizes our ‘why’.”
