Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing honored Tiffany Richards

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has awarded the 2024 Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing to Tiffany Richards.

Tiffany Richards has dedicated over two decades of her career to patient care at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she serves as an advanced practice provider and supervisor in the Myeloma department. Her passion for nursing began at a young age and has only deepened over the years, shaping her into a compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare professional committed to delivering the highest standard of care to her patients.

Richards’ influence extends beyond patient care. She is actively involved in research within the field of myeloma, where she regularly presents her findings and contributes to advancing treatment protocols. Her research has been published in six textbooks and nearly two dozen scholarly articles, cementing her status as a thought leader in her field. In addition, Richards has taken on leadership roles in various myeloma nursing organizations, serving on numerous boards and committees, where she continues to shape the future of oncology nursing.

Finalists of the 2024 Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing were also announced.

About Heather Meador

Meador is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner with 13 years of experience providing specialized pediatric care at MD Anderson. In addition to her clinical work, she serves as a clinical preceptor, mentoring nurse practitioner and physician assistant students. Meador is also dedicated to advancing the field through research, regularly presenting her findings to contribute to the broader knowledge base in pediatric care.

About Linda Amatya Shrestha

Shrestha is an advanced practice registered nurse with 16 years of experience in acute pain medicine at MD Anderson. She is committed to advancing the field through both research and ongoing professional development. In addition to her clinical expertise, Shrestha plays an active role in educating the next generation of healthcare providers, offering guidance to residents and fellow nurse practitioners. She also conducts lectures and training sessions focused on best practices in pain management.

About the 2024 Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing

This prestigious award is the highest nursing honor at MD Anderson, recognizing outstanding contributions to oncology nursing, exceptional patient care, and a deep commitment to excellence in clinical practice.

Richards was selected by a committee composed of MD Anderson’s clinical faculty, nursing leaders, patient care administrators, a patient family advisory committee, and a previous award recipient. Along with the award, Richards received a $15,000 cash prize, a commemorative crystal plaque, and a pin. Finalists for the award, Heather Meador, and Linda Amatya Shrestha, were each recognized for their excellence in nursing practice and received $5,000 each.

History of Brown Foundation

The Brown Foundation was established in 1951 by Herman and Margarett Root Brown, along with George R. and Alice Pratt Brown. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $1.6 billion in grants, focusing primarily on education, the arts, and community service.

In 1982, The Brown Foundation created the Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing, previously known as the Ethel Fleming Arceneaux Outstanding Nurse-Oncologist Award. This year marks the 43rd anniversary of the award. Through the ongoing generosity of The Brown Foundation, MD Anderson honors and recognizes the essential role oncology nurses play in advancing the institution’s mission to end cancer.
