Thomas Varghese Jr. to Lead the Journal of the American College of Surgeons in early 2025
The Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS) is a monthly peer-reviewed publication focused on all aspects of surgery, offering original clinical studies, review articles, and experimental investigations with clear clinical relevance. As the official scientific journal of the American College of Surgeons, JACS aims to deliver high-quality, relevant information to surgeons with a priority on rapid access.
Dr. Tom Varghese Jr. will take on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS) starting in early 2025. Under his leadership, JACS will continue to uphold its reputation as a premier peer-reviewed journal, delivering high-quality, relevant content to the surgical community.
Dr. Thomas Varghese Jr. serves as the Associate Chief Medical Quality Officer and Chief Value Officer at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at the University of Utah. He is also a Tenure-Track Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
Specializing in Thoracic Surgical Oncology, Dr. Varghese is a national leader in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and has been recognized as one of America’s “Top Docs” by Castle Connolly. He played a pivotal role in establishing the University of Utah’s Thoracic Surgery Center of Excellence, which has been nationally recognized by US News and World Report.
Dr. Varghese’s research focuses on optimizing performance at the patient, surgeon, and system levels. He founded the “Strong for Surgery” program, a Quality Improvement initiative now active across over 330 clinical sites in the U.S. His research, including an NCI-funded study on Prescription Exercise Programs (PEP) for lung cancer patients, bridges educational and health services research.
