A few key topics that were discussed on day 2 of the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit – Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)
“On day 2 of the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit, we continued our discussions on critical topics shaping the future of cancer control. A few key topics were discussed:
-What is the link between cancer and climate change? Experts from the oncology and environmental sciences examined the impact of climate change on cancer but also the contribution of the health sector to environmental pollution.
– We discussed the development and implementation of cancer control in fragile and emergency settings, with a focus on both displaced and host populations.
– Senior government officials underscored the importance of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as a fundamental right and a key pillar of sustainable development.
– From targeted marketing strategies aimed at young people to resistance and interference in government regulation for tobacco products, panellists dissected the methods employed by tobacco and vaping companies to undermine implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
– Experts from the fields of oncology, infectious diseases, and public health shed light on the growing concern of Antimicrobial resistance and its profound implications for cancer management.
– Early intervention and prevention are key to limit the risk of obesity on cancer. The speakers highlighted the sociocultural, policy, environmental, and behavioural factors influencing obesity rates and suggested approaches towards developing tailored responses in countries around the world.
The two days of discussion and debate leave us with valuable insights and a renewed commitment to work beyond the summit.”
