Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Attaining global equity in radiotherapy and cancer treatments

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu shared on LinkedIn:

“I recently had the pleasure of visiting Elekta’s office in Crawley, United Kingdom where I was warmly welcomed by the Managing Director, Dee Mathieson and given an enlightening tour of the production facility by Dave Remmer. Seeing the production of such cutting-edge technology, in particular the Cervical Cancer Brachytherapy suite, Gamma Knife and MRI Linac, was truly inspiring. It helped put things in perspective. The precision, coordination, and resources that goes into each machine.

This is the cadre of treatment options I’d like to see available to patients with cancer worldwide. Attaining global equity in radiotherapy and cancer treatments is achievable with the right advocacy and funding.

A special thank you to Lacy Hubbard, President, Elekta Foundation for arranging my visit, and I look forward to exploring future collaborations. The foundation’s work in cervical cancer elimination, especially in Rwanda, is commendable, and I look forward to a continued expansion.

My appreciation also goes to Clare Omatseye, MD of JNCI Nigeria, and big big thank you to the lovely Dee Mathieson for hosting and teaching us. She had me struggling to recall basic principles of Physics. Then I remembered, that’s for her. My task now is to ensure the right people, see the machines, and deliver them, at the right prices, to those who need it.”
