In October 2021, Ardem Patapoutian got an early morning call letting him know he had received the medicine prize. A little bit later, Patapoutian’s wife, Nancy Hong, snapped this photo of Patapoutian and his son Luca sitting in bed with a laptop to watch the press conference that made the announcement public.

Patapoutian shared the 2021 medicine prize with David Julius for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.
