Dean Crowe: They say a picture is worth a thousand words

Dean Crowe, Founder and CEO at the

“They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Today, Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research turns 19 and this picture is worth a thousand words.

It’s hard to believe that from a prayer circle in a driveway, we’d find ourselves in Washington, D.C., with Rally Kid Keren speaking at the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, hosted by Congressman Michael McCaul.

Keren has faced two types of cancer—rhabdomyosarcoma, which took her leg, and osteosarcoma, a bone cancer caused by her treatment. As she began speaking about her second cancer, Keren grew emotional and looked at me. I gave her a nod and a smile, letting her know she had this. But then she motioned for me to join her. I asked if she really wanted me up there, and when she said yes, I went up, gave her a quick hug, and told her, ‘You’ve got this.’ She asked, ‘Do you really think I can do this?’ My answer: ‘Absolutely. I’m right here, and Lexy is too.’

Keren picked up where she left off and was amazing. She shared about her best friend Rally Kid Lexy, who passed away last year. She asked Congress to pass the Reauthorization of the Creating Hope Act and Gabriella Miller 2.0 while thanking them for passing Accelerating Kids Access to Care sharing why each one is important for kids fighting cancer.

What stands out most in this photo? Keren’s precious and genuine smile as she received a standing ovation. The next day, she was off to Swim Across America in Atlanta, where she crushed her mile swim and her team was among the top fundraisers!

These kids are why we Rally, why we fight so hard to fund childhood cancer research, raise awareness, and support pediatric cancer families.”
