Hayley Jones: Proud to be leading the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer at the World Cancer Congress

Hayley Jones shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Proud to be leading the McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer this week as we took the global stage at the World Cancer Congress in Geneva, sharing insights on the power of using law for cancer prevention and control.

We are grateful to Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the organising committee for selecting us to present at such an amazing event. This platform allows us to share our learnings, encourage more action and get the latest news about global innovations in cancer which would benefit Australia.

We spoke as part of 6 diverse sessions covering key topics such as:
1. New and old challenges in tobacco control
2. Advancing partnerships for clean air
3. Reducing the cancer burden faster through multisectoral collaborations
4. Using human rights law for cancer prevention and control
5. Improving access to care through partnerships, advocacy and community engagement
6. Advancing the rights of cancer carers

We were so happy to collaborate with our colleagues at Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Council Australia, and with international organisations from Mexico, to Uganda, to the USA and the Philippines, and many more!

Being in Geneva also gave us the opportunity to meet with key partners and collaborators. Some more highlights:

– Attending the first workshop organised by WHO focused on “Co-creating Priorities for Cancer 2030 with people affected by cancer and emergent leaders” – a welcome initiative to raise the voice of people with lived experience of cancer and allow interactions with cancer leaders. It was a thrill to be in the UN Palais des Nations and participating in this process.

– Meeting with the Lancet Commission on Women, Power and Cancer. There was a fantastic plenary on the Commission’s work, one year on. It is an honour to have contributed to this important work and this continues. Watch this space!

– Getting the latest from WHO on e-cigarettes and the tobacco industry’s tactics.
– Meeting with so many friends from the UICC community! I have too many selfies to post, but will cherish the memories.

Thanks to my wonderful team, colleagues and new contacts for making this such a rich WCC2024. Well done to the UICC for such a great event. I look forward to welcoming you all to World Cancer Leaders’ Summit in 2025 back in my home of Melbourne!”
