Caterina Sposetti: Excess weight and risk of 2nd primary tumors in early-stage cancer survivors

Caterina Sposetti, Medical Oncology Fellow, Dana-Farber Cancer Center, shared a post on X:

New interesting article by Clara Bodelon et al. on JAMA Network Open about excess weight & risk of 2nd primary tumors in early-stage cancer survivors (n=26,894; mean age=72.2y at 1st diagnosis):

1/2 patient (42.8%) is overweight (BMI 25-29.9) and 1/5 (17.2%) obese (BMI≥30) at 1st diagnosis

Risk of obesity-related 2nd tumors (post-menopausal Breast, Colorectal, Kidney, Pancreatic):  40% for overweight (aHR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.22,-1.61) &  78% for obese (aHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.51-2.11)

15% risk of any 2nd tumors in overweight (aHR 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07-1.25) and  34% risk in obese (aHR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.21-1.48)

Essential to integrate healthy lifestyle recommendations for all patients in oncology practice!”
