Michelle Mitchell: There’s so much fantastic patient-led work happening in Cambridge and the development of the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital has the potential to transform cancer care.
Quoting Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK (CRUK), on LinkedIn:
“It’s been another busy week here at Cancer Research UK (CRUK), so I thought I’d share a few things with you that have been keeping me occupied.
On Wednesday, I wrote in The Guardian about the need for a tobacco levy if we’re to make faster progress in achieving our ambition of a Smoke free UK. Smoking remains the biggest cause of cancer and was a key talking point at the Conservative party conference in Manchester. We were pleased to hear the Prime Minister’s pledges to tackle the issue, including raising the age of sale on tobacco products and promising new funding for tobacco control. We feel these interventions – which we have been calling for through our smoke free UK campaigning work – will be critical to saving lives and reducing the burden on the NHS and the economy.
Our Executive Board, Council of Trustees, and I also spent two days visiting the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre this week. We heard inspiring talks from some of the Institute and Centre’s senior leaders Sir Stephen (Steve) Jackson, Richard Gilbertson, Charlotte Coles, and Greg Hannon. There’s so much fantastic patient-led work happening in Cambridge and the development of the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital has the potential to transform cancer care.
We were then joined by our Members to answer their questions and report on our progress across the previous year as part of our annual general meeting (AGM). The AGM is an important milestone in the calendar, ensuring we are held accountable by our Members for the work that we do.”
