Douglas Flora: The Great Wave off Kanagawa captures my feelings on certain days
Douglas Flora shared on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday, I attended the funeral of a friend who was also one of my longtime patients. It was a heavy experience, and it brought to mind a piece of art that has taken on new meaning for me. During ASCO, a dear friend gave me a print of Hokusai’s *The Great Wave off Kanagawa*. Reflecting on it after the funeral, I realized how much it captures my feelings on certain days—like a fisherman battling towering waves, trying to stay calm and focused in the storm.
The image below shows the overwhelming power of nature, with waves threatening to engulf small boats. But what stands out to me is the determination of the fishermen—they keep pushing forward, no matter what. A pretty solid reminder of the resilience we in oncology need. Every day, we face the storm of cancer alongside our patients, staying focused and determined despite the challenges.
Hokusai’s wave isn’t just about chaos; it’s about the beauty of perseverance. It reminds us that even in life’s toughest moments, there’s a strength within us that keeps us moving forward. I’m personally determined to keep pushing through, and fighting for our patients every way I can think of. I’m so grateful to have found this community of like-minded and similarly determined people! Keep pushing.
Sophie Reisz, did you know I’d need your thoughful gift when you bought it?! I love it. ”
