Abeid Athman Omar: Historic day at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital
Abeid Athman Omar, Clinical Oncology Specialist at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“Free Access To Abemaciclib For Patients With Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Today was an historic day at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.
The Max Foundation represented by Lucy Mwangi, Elo Mapelu and Cathy Scheepers finalised the deal with KUTRRH to provide free access to Verzenio HCP to patients with hormone receptor positive metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body).
KUTRRH will be the first public hospital in Kenya to provide free access to Abemaciclib. Indeed, great things happen when we come together.
In the company was Dr. Fatima Cardoso the president of ABC Global Alliance and Dan Milner from Access To Cancer Medicines – ATOM who took us through the management of metastatic breast cancer with abemaciclib and its common toxicities.
Abemaciclib is a CDK4/6 inhibitors approved to treat hormone receptor (Estrogen Receptor) positive breast cancer with a tremendous improvement in progression free survival in first and second line set-up making the patients to live longer and more comfortable. Unlike chemotherapy it doesn’t cause hair loss and nausea which bothers most patients.
This access program will be a game changer in providing global equity to access cancer medications in LMIC, giving hope to thousands of patients suffering from metastatic breast cancer.
As an oncologist with special interest in managing Breast Cancer, I am really excited and looking forward to being part of the history in changing the dynamic of managing metastatic hormone receptor breast cancer in Kenya.”
