Salome Meyer: Establishment of a National Cancer Institute that will oversee key projects and cancer services objectives in South Africa
Salome Meyer, Independent Consultant at Private, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This statement is so applicable in the South African health care system – and particularly in cancer care. Cancer Alliance (South Africa) is actively involved in advocating for equitable and affordable cancer care for all. Our focus now is on the establishment of a National Cancer Institute that will oversee key projects and cancer services objectives, including:
- Coproduce a definitive National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP), inclusive of monitoring and evaluation according to international policy development norms.
- Establish data collection and surveillance systems to inform cancer prevention and care planning, control and budgeting.
- Explore and co-create key research questions and initiatives that are locally relevant and inform cancer prevention and control.
- Establish standardized guidelines for all common cancers (adult and paediatric) in both the public and private sectors, incorporating appropriate referral pathways and ensuring equitable and affordable access to comprehensive care.
- Address staffing, training and education needs to ensure South Africa has appropriately skilled health care professionals to comprehensively address cancer care and management.
These objectives are underpinned by an emphasis on human rights-based principles, ensuring mechanisms for multi-stakeholder and sectoral engagement and patient, family, and community involvement.”
