Ka Shing Michael Cheung: Honored to to deliver the talk on pancreatic cancer screening and surveillance in the 28th Hong Kong Medical Forum

Ka Shing Michael Cheung, Clinical Associate Professor in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at HKU, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Honored to be invited to deliver the talk on pancreatic cancer screening and surveillance in the 28th Hong Kong Medical Forum.

There has been a rise in the incidence rate of pancreatic cancer worldwide due to metabolic risk factors like diabetes mellitus and obesity. Pancreatic cancer carries a dismal prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of about 10%.

Current international consensus is to perform pancreatic cancer surveillance in high-risk individuals namely:

  • Pathogentic germline variants and hereditary syndrome.
  •  Familial pancreatic cancer.
  •  Premalignant pancreatic cystic lesions, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplams and mucinous cystic neoplasms but not in the general population. Number of affected family members should be taken into consideration.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is the most sensitive surveillance modality for detecting small pancreatic tumor lesions < 1-2cm. EUS-guided elastography and Contrast-enhanced EUS (CH-EUS) can further increase diagnostic accuracy.
