“Sitting in on Jessi Gold’s reflection on burnout and leaving a career in medicine in her breakout session entitled Should You Quit Your Job?

Reasons we don’t quit, despite being overwhelmed and unhappy:
– Feeling called.
– If I don’t, who will?
– Supportive coworkers, leadership.

Data supports that many physicians consider leaving clinical work or medicine altogether. However, leaving your job is a PRIVILEGE:
Money, Support, Health Insurance, Benefits, Finding a new job all contribute to this process.

No longer enjoying your work? Tips with Jessi Gold:
– Take your emotional temperature – no rage quitting!
– Determine, am I burned out? (Like nearly 50% of physicians)

Jessi Gold – A Burned Out Burnout Expert who landed herself on The New York Times for the paradox that resulted of not practicing what she preached! We’re all human. Sometimes we run, sometimes we need a nap.

What does burnout look like to YOU? Emotionally exhausted? Depersonalizing those around you? Reduced productivity? “I can’t DO any more” (checking in). Yoga, although lovely, will not cure severe burnout – a scale of noticing.

Resilience in medicine is framed in the idea that the system is great and you are the problem. Realistically, the system is broken and resilience is navigating that system with intention, anyway.

A boat with holes in a river… We can’t fix it with two lowly buckets – we have to fix the holes or remove the water! We don’t have to go from yellow to red. Consider resources like FMLA, Mental Health Days, or asking for mental health help before big decisions.

Reporting burnout over DOUBLES your likelihood to reduce hours or have the intent to leave medicine. It’s clouding our ability to make safe and logical career decisions. Focus on your identity and the good.

Self Inventory, Three Good Things have both shown to minimize burnout by reflecting on the self and it’s alignment with your work and finding something good despite when things are bad.

“Noticing the good doesn’t discount the bad.”

What Are Your Workplace Values? Jessi Gold’s:
– Transparency
– Expressing gratitude
– Feeling Valued
**Especially if you’re considering leaving and evaluating new positions.

Focusing on the Control.
– What can I control?
– What can’t I control?
– What is the difference?
If it’s out of your control, cross it off the list.

But hey, if you want to quit? Cool. You’re not alone. These are valid. With a job in medicine, you’re going to be affected by your job.
‘Sometimes the humanity wins, and if medicine doesn’t recognize it, that’s medicine’s fault.’ ”
