Denis Wirtz: The recruitment of monocytes fuel tumor growth via MAPK pathway activation

Denis Wirtz, Vice Provost of Research at Johns Hopkins University, shared on X about recent paper by Wenxuan Du et al., commenting:

“Our work suggests that macrophages are not recruited into a tumor, but are enriched through the recruitment of monocytes. These monocytes, not the macrophages that they differentiate into, fuel tumor growth via MAPK pathway activation. We identify tumor-associated monocytes (TAMo’s) that, unlike TAMΦ’s, display a dramatically enhanced migration induced by the TME and promote cancer cell proliferation

Read about migration capability of macrophages vs. monocytes.”

High-motility pro-tumorigenic monocytes drive macrophage enrichment in the tumor microenvironment
