We Can Do Better: Childhood Cancer News Digest – Jennifer Ivanovich
WE CAN DO BETTER!
In a report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Afre and colleagues published data on the time for new molecular entities (NMEs) to obtain FDA approval. Over 572 drugs were included in the study and followed from the phase 1 trials beginning in 2010 -2015 until 2020. Of the 572 NMEs, only 67 (11.7%) were tested in pediatric eligible trials. A total of 39 drugs were approved within the follow-up period. NMEs had a 10.4% probability to being approved by the FDA within 10 years. HOWEVER, for trials open to children, ONLY 5 NMEs WERE APPROVED. The probability of a NME with pediatric approval obtaining FDA approval in 10 years was ONLY 1.4%.
Hospital General-Tijuana in Mexico and Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego have joined in a beautiful effort to address the health disparity of children diagnosed with ALL in Mexico. The cross-border initiative began in 2013 and since then the teams have shown an increase in 5-year overall survival from 59% to 65%. Specifically, the OS increased from 48% to 55% for children with high-risk disease and from 73% – 100% for children who leukemia classified as standard risk! Furthermore, the two partners have expanded to include collaborative care of children with CNS tumors.
