”Our recent publication with Nasr Eldin Elwali in BMC Cancer, ‘Pancreatic cancer in Saudi Arabia (2005-2020): increasing trend!’, sheds light on concerning trends in pancreatic cancer for both men and women in Saudi Arabia.

Key findings:

• Mirroring global trends: Similar to most countries, Saudi Arabia is experiencing a rise in pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality rates.
• Predominantly affecting an aging population: The data suggests pancreatic cancer primarily impacts older Saudi citizens.
• Incidence rates compared: In 2020, Saudi Arabia’s Age-Standardized Rates (ASRs) for pancreatic cancer were 3.0 for males and 1.8 for females. These figures align with the Gulf region (2.4-4.2 ASR) but remain lower than Europe (7.8 ASR) and North America (8.0 ASR).
• Regional disparities: Notably, significant variations exist in pancreatic cancer incidence across different regions within Saudi Arabia.
• Gender differences observed: Our research also highlights variations in pancreatic cancer incidence between Saudi men and women.

The significance of our findings:

This study offers valuable insights for understanding and addressing pancreatic cancer in Saudi Arabia. The rising incidence necessitates ongoing research and public health initiatives. Regional variations, along with the higher risk among older adults and males, point towards potential, yet uninvestigated, risk factors.”
