Rasha Aboelhassan: Maha passed away wondering if there are any screening opportunities for passive smoking
Rasha Aboelhassan, Senior Oncology Consultant at Nasser Institute Hospital, shared a post on Linkedin:
“I met Mrs Maha a few years ago when she had the diagnosis of stage IV squamous cell carcinoma NSCLC, no mutation detection, and PDL1 negative.
She reported that she had never been a smoker.
Maha was 35 years old single working mother with 4 years old sun.
When I asked about her work, she said that she’s been working in famous Café in smoking areas for 10 years.
She had a cough for three months, and the chest doctor said that since she did never smoke, she did not need any screening for lung cancer .
Unfortunately, Maha had three lines of systemic therapy, with survival for only one year .
She passed away and was wondering if there are any screening opportunities for passive smoking specifically for her colleagues in the smoking area of working in Cafe
I remembered my patient when I read the following research.
Passive Smoking–Induced Mutagenesis as a Promoter of Lung Carcinogenesis.
The discovery of mutation processing for lung cancer in passive smokers, which may give them wider opportunities for screening and early detection of lung cancer, and subsequently, longer survival.”
