The Role of Radiotherapy and AI in Cancer Treatment at National Summit – National Cancer Institute of Kenya
National Cancer Institute of Kenya shared a post on X:
“The 2nd National Cancer Summit was a powerful platform that brought together diverse voices with a united mission: To address cancer strategies and the rising number of cancer cases in Africa, as highlighted by GLOBOCAN 2020 in Kenya and across the world. Professor Shaukat Abdulrazak, Director of the Africa Division at the International Atomic Energy Agency and former Director General of National Commission for Science,Tech and Innovation, emphasized the critical role of radiotherapy, noting that nearly 50% of cancer patients require it as part of treatment.
In collaboration with National Cancer Institute of Kenya, Kenya Medical Research Institute, and the Ministry of Health, his research focuses on generating data-driven innovations for affordable and accessible cancer solutions. This includes expanding digital screening tools and applying AI to interpret radiology data. He also highlighted the importance of capacity building, proposing Kenyatta University Referral Teaching Hospital as a training hub.
Professor Shaukat urged greater investment in cancer research to strengthen locally generated data and inform effective strategies. His call was clear: to unite our voices and take bold action so that cancer is no longer seen as a death sentence, but as a battle we are prepared to fight and win together.”
