Saro Armenian: Cures Have Never Been More Attainable Than Today
Saro Armenian, Barron Hilton Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at City of Hope, shared City of Hope‘s post, adding:
“There have been remarkable advances in childhood cancer treatment, and cures have never been more attainable than today.
That said, our unwavering commitment to our long term survivors remains as strong as ever.
The mission is clear, to cure the body without compromising the soul – a longstanding foundational mission at City of Hope.”
Quoting City of Hope‘s post:
“Some survivors of childhood cancer face greater health risks as they age, including the possibility of developing new cancers and chronic conditions such as heart disease.
A new City of Hope-led study — the first to examine survivors who have reached age 50 — offers both an important warning and a reason for hope: Many of these conditions can be managed or even prevented if detected early.
Authors of the study Rusha Bhandari, M.D., and Saro Armenian, D.O., M.P.H., emphasize the need for close collaboration between survivors, primary care providers, and survivorship programs to ensure early screening and treatment of health issues, including secondary cancers, caused by lifesaving childhood cancer treatments. Some survivors may need to begin screening for conditions like breast or colon cancer earlier than the general population.”
