Paul Singh: The City of London will launch the Cancer Workforce Fund

Paul Singh, Founder of EEDN, shared the following post on LinkedIn:

“I am thrilled to announce a significant milestone in the healthcare sector!

On the 4th April 2024, the City of London will launch the Cancer Workforce Fund, a pioneering initiative in collaboration with the European Cancer Community Foundation and the Lord Mayor’s Connect to Prosper programme.

This groundbreaking fund is set to tackle the pressing issue of healthcare workforce shortages head-on by supporting innovative projects on the ground, amplifying their impact, and influencing national and international healthcare policies. By fostering a robust network of experts, practitioners, and change-makers, we aim to address the global challenge of workforce shortages in healthcare.

The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated. According to the World Health Organization, there will be a shortfall of 18 million healthcare workers globally by 2030. Even before the challenges posed by COVID-19, Europe faced a critical situation, with 40% of its physicians predicted to retire within five years. The strain on our healthcare systems is evident, with significant staff turnover and persistently high nursing vacancy rates.

The launch event, hosted at the Mansion House and introduced by Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli, will bring together leaders from the scientific, academic, and business communities to strategize on a unified approach to address the healthcare workforce crisis. The City of London’s investments in life sciences, biotech, and healthcare underscore our commitment to fostering innovation, but these endeavors rely heavily on a skilled and sustainable healthcare workforce.

The European Cancer Community Foundation, established by the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), is dedicated to financing pilot projects, forging collaborations, and championing innovation to combat disparities in cancer care.

I am immensely proud to have worked alongside Julie Fitzsimmins and ECO CEO Mike Morrissey to bring this event to fruition in the City of London. Having recently witnessed the dedication and passion of our healthcare workforce firsthand, I am convinced of the transformative potential of the Cancer Workforce Fund.

The event is almost at full capacity, but if you are passionate about this crucial issue or keen to support the fund, please do comment or send me a private message. Every contribution, no matter how small, has the power to make a significant impact. Let us come together and pave the way for a brighter future in healthcare!”
