Elisabeth Potter: The Impact of Rising Insurance Costs on Breast Cancer Treatment Choices
Elisabeth Potter, Board Certified plastic surgeon, shared a post on X:
“I met with a woman today with breast cancer who has been forced to make an impossible choice. She found a breast mass over a year ago but waited 10 months to get it diagnosed because she couldn’t afford insurance. She works 50 hours a week in the service industry, was denied Medicaid, and finally had her biopsy covered by Planned Parenthood.
She’s now had a mastectomy and chemotherapy. But she still needs radiation and also wants breast reconstruction. But starting in January, her Affordable Care Act plan will jump from just over $100 to $500 a month due to The Big Beautiful Bill – something she simply cannot afford.
Now she’s faced with a decision no patient should ever have to make:
Does she use her remaining months of coverage for radiation and live with one breast?
Or does she have breast reconstruction now and hope she can get insurance again later to cover the radiation?
This is the reality of our system. A young woman, already carrying the weight of cancer, being forced to choose between treatments that should both be accessible. It’s unreal and it’s happening every day.”
