Jennifer Bires: New NCI-Funded Grant Expands ESPEC Oncology Training for Social Workers

Jennifer Bires, Executive Director at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, shared on LinkedIn:

Big news: AOSW is partnering on a new NCI-funded grant to expand and enhance the ESPEC Oncology training program! (Educating Social Workers in Palliative and End-of-Life Care)

For years, oncology social workers have been at the forefront of delivering compassionate, psychosocial care to people with cancer and their families. This new five-year initiative, ESPEC Oncology: Transforming Psychosocial and Palliative Cancer Care, is a tremendous opportunity to support social workers in practicing at the top of their license and advance collaborative cancer care nationwide.

What’s new?

This program offers in-depth, evidence-based training and national mentorship for 40–50 competitively selected oncology social workers each year. The experience includes an intensive 1.5-day in-person workshop — and best of all, all training and travel costs are covered by the grant.

Social workers are uniquely positioned to lead in the delivery of high-quality psychosocial and palliative care.

Are you a social worker in oncology? Do you have social workers on your team?

A huge congratulations to Tara Schapmire, Myra Glajchen, Shirley Otis-Green, Barbara Jones, and Brad Zebrack for all they do to continue to elevate Oncology Social Work.”
