Maren Bronson: The Privilege of Interning as an Event and Social Media Intern at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC
Maren Bronson, Events and Social Media Intern at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This summer, I had the incredible privilege of interning as an Event and Social Media Intern with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC in Las Vegas. During my time, I contributed to the planning and execution of two major fundraising events, Viva St. Jude and the St. Jude Walk, aiming to raise $1 million and $165,000, respectively.
A key part of my role was leading auction procurement efforts, where I researched and reached out to local businesses, community members, and past sponsors to secure valuable in-kind donations. I also maintained detailed tracking systems using Auction and Event Solutions (AES) software and spreadsheets to keep auction logistics organized and ensure timely communication with our Viva Auction Committee Chairs. This experience taught me the importance of meticulous organization and strong relationship-building in successful event and fundraising management.
On the marketing side, I developed and executed social media campaigns designed to build excitement and increase awareness. This included creating branded graphics, sponsor spotlights, committee member features, behind the scenes content, and managing a content calendar aligned with ticket sales and announcements. I enjoyed collaborating with our Viva Committee Members to showcase their executive roles in this event and highlight their personal testimonials about why they support St. Jude.
Supporting event day operations, from vendor coordination, such as representing St. Jude at the NBA Summer League, to social media updates, was a rewarding way to see the direct impact of our efforts in real time. I had the opportunity to engage directly with the Las Vegas community and begin building lasting connections with local partners, all while contributing to events that support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s lifesaving mission, Finding cures. Saving children.
As part of the broader internship program, I also had the privilege of participating in the Intern Innovation Challenge alongside fellow interns from across the country. Our team was tasked with developing a prototype to engage the next generation of philanthropists, specifically younger donors and college students, after attending a St. Jude event. We presented our solution to the Executive Leadership Team in July, which strengthened my skills in public speaking, research, collaboration, and high-level presentation.
This internship deepened my passion for nonprofit work and gave me invaluable hands-on experience in event coordination, donor relations, and digital marketing. I’m incredibly grateful to my Las Vegas team, Erica Thompson, Lisa Kelly, and Michelle Gonzaga, for their mentorship and support, and to Sondra Khammavong and Molly Mueller for creating such a meaningful and growth-oriented internship experience. I’m so proud to have been part of the Desert West team and excited to carry everything I’ve learned into the next chapter of my professional journey!”
