Miriam Mutebi: What Legacy Truly Means for African Leadership in Cancer Care
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I managed to sneak in one final destination stop before leaving beautiful Accra, and no, it wasn’t for jollof.
A quiet visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, a day after the close of the PMBAC summit, reminded me what legacy truly means for African leadership in cancer care.
There’s something deeply grounding about standing in the space that honors a man who dreamed of one Africa. Not just politically, but in spirit, vision, and purpose.
As I walked through the museum, one quote stayed with me:
‘It is clear that we must find an African solution to our problems, and that this can only be found in African unity. Divided, we are weak; united, Africa could become one of the greatest forces for good in the world.’ – Kwame Nkrumah, 1963.
I often speak about AORTIC – Africa and the work we do to strengthen cancer care across the continent. This includes the partnerships and funding we seek to make it happen.
This unity that Nkrumah spoke of over 60 years ago is still at the heart of it.
- The struggle to unite.
- To pool our resources.
- To build systems rooted in context, culture, and care.
In cancer control, I see the same tensions Nkrumah named:
- Superimposed models that don’t always fit
- Fragmented efforts despite shared goals
And yet… the quiet force of Africans rising to lead their own solutions gives me hope.
I left the memorial with a clear conviction:
Unity isn’t a slogan. It’s a strategy.
And for Africa to lead in science, education, and health, we must keep choosing each other.
Together is the only way forward.”
