Alique Topalian: Highlighting the Importance of Oncology Primary Care for Childhood Cancer Survivors
Alique Topalian, Research Scientist of Survivorship and Supportive Services at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Just returned from the 4th International Symposium on Late Complications after Childhood Cancer. We presented our poster “Oncology Primary Care Clinics Provide Comprehensive Care for High-Risk Pediatric and Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Survivors.” It was incredible to learn more about the longitudinal findings of the St. Jude’s Childhood Cancer Survivorship Study (CCSS). As a participant of the CCSS from my first AML diagnosis in 1998 I was astounded to learn more about the wide variety of late and long term effects our childhood survivors face.
So much of what we know about longitudinal survivorship today has stemmed from this study. We see increases in mortality, frailty, cardiovascular and neuro-cognitive issues in childhood survivors. Many face an increase in complications the further out from treatment they are. This all highlights what an important model Oncology Primary Care is! We can care for these high risk survivors across their lifespan. Having providers trained in guidelines and potential complications can help mitigate mismanagement of comorbid conditions.”
