Douglas Flora: How Nature and Exercise Support Cancer Recovery

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and President-Elect of Association of Cancer Care Centers, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Cancer patients, head for the trees.
“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than they seek.” – John Muir
Returning from our first trip to Bend, Oregon – already planning a return. This place delivers on everything you’ve heard about it.
Spent the weekend hiking with my people and finding time by mountain rivers. There’s solid research showing how exercise and nature benefit cancer patients – both physically and mentally. More patients need to discover what the outdoors can offer during treatment and recovery.
Shoutout to American Hiking Society for their incredible work connecting people to trails and sharing the healing power of time outdoors. Organizations like this are doing essential work.
The trails around Bend reminded me why this matters. Work demands focus and intensity, but healing requires something different. Time in the trees, feet on trails, and conversations that matter. Back to work tomorrow with a clearer head and stronger legs.
Happy summer, everyone! And happy 29th anniversary to the one that makes trips like this possible, Andrea Flora—hopefully many more trips for us ahead.”
